Most of what goes wrong on a residential project goes wrong in a handoff. The person who quoted it is not the person who runs it, the crew changes halfway through, and by the time something needs fixing nobody owns it.

Freeze-thaw is the thing that decides whether hardscaping lasts here. A patio or driveway fails from underneath, not from the top, which is why the base work matters more than the pavers laid on it. The same logic runs through the rest of the work: drainage that moves water away from a foundation, footings taken below the frost line, and grading that accounts for what the ground does in April rather than what it looks like in July.
